The Beauty of Duality.

Fire and water. Chaos and calm. Destruction and creation. Darkness and light.

Nature reminds us that opposites aren’t necessarily in conflict. They coexist, complement each other, and give meaning to one another.

The same forces that destroy can also create. The darkest skies can reveal the brightest colors. And even in the middle of chaos, beauty finds a way to emerge.

Inspired by the powerful contrasts of Hawaiʻi, this mosaic celebrates the duality of life. The fierce, untamed energy of Pele beneath the gentle beauty of a rainbow.

Two very different expressions of the same extraordinary world.

A reminder that life isn’t always one thing or the other. Sometimes, it’s everything at once.

This mosaic brings together two separate moments at Kīlauea.

The volcanic scene was inspired by a photograph from Episode 45. The meteor recalls a moment I captured on video during Episode 54, shortly before the eruption ended: a brief streak of light passing above the volcanic fire.

Raised 3D textures give the volcanic landscape depth, while sculpted lava flows extend over the rim and beyond the dish. The custom-painted black dish carries the dark volcanic palette around the mosaic, contrasting with the bright reds, oranges, and yellows of the lava. Above it, the meteor crosses the dark sky.

A lasting landscape and a fleeting light, brought together in one piece. Two memories of looking closely, and being there.

This mosaic is my interpretation of Katsushika Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa, widely known as The Great Wave. Created around 1830–1832, the Japanese woodblock print belongs to his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

I’m exploring its curling wave and reaching foam through blue, white, and reflective tiles, adapting that sense of movement to a round terracotta dish.

Makapuʻu is where I spent much of my time on Oʻahu, watching king tides and massive waves. It holds a very special, sacred place in my heart. It is also where I held a ceremony to honor my grandmother’s passing.

This piece brings my admiration for Hokusai’s wave together with my own connection to Makapuʻu: its powerful ocean, the time I spent there, and the memory of my grandmother.

Still unfinished, the piece reveals part of my process: placed tiles beside open space and drawn outlines. A familiar image finding another expression, fragment by fragment.

Episode 51 marked the first time I witnessed the lava river for myself. Alongside the fountain, that flowing ribbon of molten rock gave me another way to experience the eruption’s movement.

This mosaic follows that memory through bright reds, oranges, and yellows. The fountain draws the eye upward, while the river carries it down the side of the landscape.

Blue sky, pale clouds, dark volcanic ground, and green plants surround the fire. For me, the piece preserves the excitement of seeing something new in a volcano I return to again and again.

Oʻahu’s Koʻolau Range carries the history of an ancient volcano, transformed by erosion and enormous landslides into the dramatic landscape we see today.

When I lived on Oʻahu, I often hiked the Koʻolau Range, spending time exploring these beautiful mountains. Those experiences gave me a personal connection to the landscape that inspired this piece.

This mosaic celebrates its steep green ridges, cloud-covered heights, and the tropical flowers of my interpretation. Two shades of green create depth, while iridescent tiles catch the light along the cliffs.

Where my eruption pieces explore the energy of land taking shape, this work reflects the beauty that time reveals. An island’s volcanic beginnings live on in its mountains, valleys, and changing textures.

Red and orange lava rise against a field of white, framed by the deep black of the dish.

In this piece, I use a limited palette to bring attention to the eruption’s movement: the upward burst of the fountain, the curve of the cone, and the spread of lava below.

The broken shapes of individual tiles give the scene its rhythm. Together, they hold the energy of something that never stays still.

A study in contrast, and in the way small fragments can become a powerful whole.
